Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 2 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 tsp
  • margarine - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 2 oz

How to make red velvet cake:

Add vinegar and soda; cover and set aside. Cream margarine, sugar and eggs. Make a paste with cocoa and food coloring and add to mixture. Stir salt into buttermilk. Alternate adding buttermilk and dry ingredients to mixture. Add vanilla. Quickly add soda and vinegar to mixture and blend well. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. (Do not overbeat mixture.) Ice layers with icing of choice.
