Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1/4 tsp
- butter - 1/2 c
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 Tbsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- red food coloring - 2 oz
- cake flour
- white vinegar - 1 Tbsp
- sugar, granulated - 1 c
- Make a paste of the food coloring and cocoa
How to make red velvet cake:
Cream butter with sugar, add eggs. Make a paste of the food coloring and cocoa. Add to the creamed mixture. Add alternating buttermilk with sifted flour and salt. Then add vanilla. Add soda to vinegar. Hold over the bowl as it foams. Then blend into the cake mixture. Pour into 2 greased and floured 1 inch pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool on wire rack, when cool, split each layer into 2 layers.Frosting:3 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 c. sugar, granulated1 c. butter1 tsp. vanilla Blend the flour in a small amount of the cold milk, heating, stirring constantly and adding the remaining milk. Cook until very thick. Cream sugar, butter and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add to the first mixture. Mix until well blended. It should have the texture of whipped cream.
