Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • water - 1 c
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 2 Tbsp
  • sticks margarine - 2 item
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • plain flour
  • Crisco - 1/2 c
  • nuts optional - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 2 oz
  • coconut optional - 1/2 c
  • Make paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to creamed mixture

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream shortening and sugar and beat well; add eggs. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to creamed mixture. Sift dry ingredients and alternate with milk to creamed mixture. Sprinkle soda over mixture, then add 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Sitr until thoroughly mixed through batter. Bake in 3 greased and floured 8-inch pans for 30 to 35 minutes in 350° oven. Cool before frosting.Frosting For Red Velvet Cake:2 Tbsp. cornstarch1 c. water2 sticks margarine1 c. sugar1 tsp. vanilla1/2 c. coconut (optional)1/2 c. nuts (optional) Combine cornstarch and water. Cook until thick. Cool completely. Cream until fluffy the margarine, sugar and vanilla. Add to cornstarch mixture. Continue to beat until like whipped cream. May add coconut and nuts, if desired.
