Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 Tbsp
  • milk - 1 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 2 c
  • butter - 1/2 lb
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 2 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 2 oz
  • Add eggs and beat

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream the shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat. Combine cocoa and food coloring to make a paste. Stir into creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt together. Add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture. Blend well; add vanilla. Combine vinegar and soda. While still foaming, add to the batter. Do not beat, instead stir gently. Bake in two greased and floured layer pans at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.Icing:3 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 c. sugar1/2 lb. butter1/2 tsp. vanilla Cook flour and milk over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly. Cool. Add sugar, butter and vanilla. Beat at high speed on mixer until smooth and creamy. Spread on cooked cake. Icing will take a length of time to set. It resembles whipped cream when cool.
