Ingredients/Components

  • butter - 4 Tbsp
  • small onion, chopped - 1 item
  • grated sharp Cheddar cheese - 3/4 lb
  • medium potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/8-inch thin - 4 item

How to make potatoes au gratin:

In a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish, layer potatoes, onion and cheese with salt and pepper to taste. Dot each layer with butter. Cover with milk until it shows at corners. Sprinkle with parsley or paprika. Bake at 350° for one hour. Serves 4 to 6.

Variation: Substitute mixed vegetables for potatoes to make Vegetable Au Gratin.
