Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • cinnamon - 1/2 tsp
  • flour - 2 c
  • water - 1/4 c
  • soda - 1/2 tsp
  • shortening - 1/4 c
  • molasses - 1/4 c
  • ginger - 1/2 tsp
  • pepper - 1/8 tsp
  • oil of anise - 1/2 tsp

How to make peppernuts:

Sift flour once before measuring. Cream shortening; add sugar, cinnamon, salt and pepper. Add some dry ingredients to shortening and sugar mixture. Mix water and molasses and add alternately with the flour. Roll into 1-inch balls. Brush tops with water and bake. Frost or roll in powdered sugar.
