In a greased heavy frying pan, grill hamburger patties over medium-high heat 4 to 5 minutes per side for rare and 6 minutes per side for medium. Add vegetable oil to pan and then onions. Saute onions until soft and golden brown. Top 2 slices of bread with hamburgers, then with onions, a slice of cheese and remaining slices of bread. Lightly butter outside of sandwich and grill on a griddle or in a heavy frying pan until brown on both sides and cheese is melted.
