How to make overnight french toast:
Butter a 9 x 13-inch pan. Cut bread into 1-inch slices and arrange in single layer in pan. In a large bowl, beat eggs with milk, sugar, salt and vanilla. Pour over bread. Cover with foil and refrigerate. Next day, uncover and dot with butter. Bake at 350° until puffy and light brown. Serve with syrup.
