Ingredients/Components

  • cornstarch - 1 Tbsp
  • water - 1 Tbsp
  • sliced almonds - 1/2 c
  • margarine - 2 Tbsp
  • chopped onion - 1/4 c
  • soy sauce - 1 Tbsp
  • chicken broth - 1 c
  • salt and pepper to taste - 1 item
  • sliced mushrooms - 4 oz
  • sliced celery - 1/2 c
  • sliced water chestnuts - 1/2 c
  • bean sprouts, rinsed and drained - 1 c
  • pimento, drained and chopped - 2 oz
  • uncooked rice not instant - 1/2 c
  • lean pork cubed - 3/4 lb
  • lean chicken, cubed - 3/4 lb
  • gravy beef, pork or chicken - 1 c

How to make oriental rice:

Saute pork, chicken, onion and mushrooms until lightly browned. Stir in broth, salt, pepper and rice. Cook, covered, over low heat for 15 minutes. Add water chestnuts, bean sprouts, celery, pimento and 2 tablespoons almonds. Combine cornstarch, water, soy sauce and gravy. Stir into pork and chicken. Simmer two minutes or until thickened. Garnish with remaining sliced almonds. Makes 4 servings.
