Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • self-rising flour - 1/2 c
  • margarine, melted - 6 Tbsp
  • black pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • grated sharp Cheddar cheese - 2 c
  • sweet onions, chopped best with Vidalias - 5 c

How to make onions au gratin:

Chop onions, not small, more like chunks. Mix onions with 1 1/2 cup cheese and remaining ingredients. Pour into a 2 quart casserole baking dish.

Crumble saltine crackers to make approximately 1/2 cup. Mix with remaining 1/3 cup cheese. Sprinkle on top of casserole. Bake at 350° for 20 to 30 minutes, until just bubbly. Good if onions are just barely "crunchy" done.
