How to make onion casserole:
Preheat oven to 375°. Parboil onions 10 minutes; drain. Put half the onions into an 8 x 8-inch shallow baking dish coated with non-stick vegetable cooking spray. Layer with half the bread and half Cheddar cheese. Repeat with the remaining onions, bread and Cheddar cheese. Combine eggs, milk, salt and pepper in a bowl. Pour mixture over the top layer. Sprinkle with cayenne pepper and dot with butter or margarine. Place casserole baking dish into a larger baking dish; add hot water to the outer dish halfway up the side of the casserole dish (like making a custard). Bake for 40 minutes. Serves 4. Great dish to make ahead. Rewarm in oven or microwave.Recipe categories: Eggs/dairy, Side dish, Casseroles.
