  • sugar - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 Tbsp
  • water - 2 c
  • cold water - 1/4 c
  • vegetable oil - 2 Tbsp
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • all-purpose flour - 2 Tbsp
  • lemon juice - 1 Tbsp
  • pepper - 1/2 tsp
  • Worcestershire sauce - 1 tsp
  • soy sauce - 1 tsp
  • bay leaf - 1/2 tsp
  • clove garlic - 1 item
  • Italian seasoning - 1 tsp
  • carrots, peeled and sliced - 6 item
  • medium potatoes, peeled and cubed - 6 item
  • medium onion, sliced - 1 item
  • dash of allspice - 1 item
  • small white onions, peeled - 1 lb
  • boneless chuck, cut in 1 1/2 inch cubes - 2 lb

How to make old time beef stew:

Heat oil in Dutch oven. Add beef and cook over medium heat about 20 minutes, turning often to brown evenly. Stir in next 13 ingredients. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaf and garlic. Add carrots, whole onions and potatoes; cover and simmer 30 minutes longer or until vegetables are done. Gradually add 1/4 cup cold water to flour in a little mixing bowl, mixing well. Pour into stew, stirring constantly until gravy thickens. Simmer 5 minutes. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.
