How to make old-fashioned sugar cookies:

Cream together the butter and sugars. Beat eggs and salt together and add to creamed mixture. Add oil and vanilla. Sift together the flour, soda and cream of tartar. Add to first mixture. If you wish to roll the dough and cut out the cookies, refrigerate dough for an hour. Bake at 350° for approximately 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 7 dozen 2-inch cookies.

Catherine Clark prefers to roll the dough into a ball between her hands and place 1 inch apart on a greased cookie sheet. Put 1/2 cup granulated sugar in a small sauce dish and be ready with a glass tumbler about 2 1/2 inches in diameter to be used for dipping in the sugar and pressing the dough flat. A glass with a sunburst pattern on the bottom transfers itself to the cookie as you press. As soon as the tumbler is oily, it picks up enough sugar to decorate the top of the cookie and at the same time, prevents the dough from sticking to it.
