Ingredients/Components

  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1/4 tsp
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • melted butter - 1/2 c
  • dark brown sugar - 3/4 c
  • flour, sifted - 3 c
  • dark molasses
  • plus 1 tsp - 1 Tbsp
  • mace - 1 tsp
  • eggs, beaten until lemon colored - 2 item

How to make old-fashioned gingerbread:

Combine flour, spices, salt and soda. Sift into a large bowl. Stir in brown sugar.

Combine eggs with molasses, melted butter and buttermilk. Add this liquid to dry ingredients, stirring under and up to blend well. Incorporate as much air as possible. Butter and lightly flour 12 x 9 x 3-inch or 11 x 7 1/2 x 2-inch pan. Turn batter into pan, leaving center slightly lower. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes.
