Ingredients/Components

  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • granulated sugar - 1/2 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • all-purpose flour
  • firmly packed brown sugar - 3/4 c
  • salt optional - 1 tsp
  • nutmeg optional - 1/4 tsp
  • cinnamon optional - 1 tsp
  • Quaker oats quick or old-fashioned, uncooked - 3 c
  • 2 1/2 sticks margarine

How to make oatmeal cookies:

Heat oven to 375°. Beat margarine and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Add combined flour, baking soda, salt and spices; mix well. Stir in oats. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8 to 9 minutes for a chewy cookie; 10 to 11 minutes for a crisp cookie. Cool 1 minute on a cookie sheet; remove to a wire rack. Store tightly covered. Makes 4 1/2 dozen.
