Ingredients/Components

  • pkg - 1 oz
  • milk
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • butter - 1/4 c
  • all-purpose flour - 3 Tbsp
  • butter, melted
  • dry mustard - 1/4 tsp
  • pepper - 1/8 tsp
  • dried parsley flakes - 1 tsp
  • onion powder - 1/4 tsp
  • shredded Cheddar cheese about 8 oz - 2 c
  • curry powder optional - 1/4 tsp
  • fine dry bread crumbs unseasoned - 2/3 c

How to make macaroni and cheese:

Topping:1/4 c. butter, melted2/3 c. fine dry bread crumbs (unseasoned)1 tsp. dried parsley flakes Preheat oven to 350°. Cook macaroni as directed on package; drain. Transfer to 2-quart casserole. Set aside. In small saucepan, melt butter. Remove from heat. Stir in flour, salt, onion powder, dry mustard, curry powder and pepper. Gradually blend in milk. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture thickens and bubbles. Stir in cheese until smooth. Remove from heat and stir into macaroni.

For topping, combine melted butter, bread crumbs and parsley flakes. Sprinkle over macaroni and cheese. Bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes or until bubbly. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Spicy Macaroni and Cheese: Follow the recipe. After cooking macaroni, melt 1 tablespoon butter in small skillet. Add 1/3 cup chopped green pepper and 1/4 cup chopped onion. Cook and stir over medium heat until tender. Add to macaroni. Drain 1 (16 ounce) can whole tomatoes. Chop and add to macaroni. Continue as directed, substituting 1/2 teaspoon chili powder and 1/8 teaspoon ground cumin for dry mustard, onion powder and curry.
