Ingredients/Components

  • bay leaf - 1 item
  • carrots - 2 item
  • stalks celery - 3 item
  • large onion, chopped - 1 item
  • dried lentils - 1 lb
  • ham hock - 1 item
  • whole peppercorns - 8 item
  • medium potato - 1 item

How to make lentil soup:

Serve with dill pickles and hot bread

Drop ham hock, scrubbed, into enough water to cover. Add peppercorns, bay leaf and onion.

Start heat. When water boils, lower heat to simmer. Wash lentils and add. Dice potato, carrot and celery. Toss into pot. Season to taste. Check to be sure water does not simmer away. You may need to add more. Simmer 1 1/2 hours or until veggies are done and lentils are soft.
