Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • cinnamon
  • flour - 2 c
  • water - 2 Tbsp
  • nutmeg
  • cold water - 2 Tbsp
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • powdered sugar
  • cloves
  • honey - 1/2 c
  • almond slivers - 1 c
  • orange or lemon extract - 1/4 tsp
  • grated peel from 2 oranges
  • grated peel from 2 lemons

How to make leckerli:

Icing:1 c. powdered sugar2 Tbsp. water1/4 tsp. orange or lemon extract Combine sugar and honey in a saucepan and bring to a boil over low heat. Remove from heat. Combine spices and grated lemon and orange peels and add to sugar mixture. Dissolve baking soda in cold water and add to sugar mixture. Add flour and almonds. Knead dough until well blended. On a floured surface, roll out dough into a rectangle 1/2-inch thick. Place onto a cookie sheet lined with heavy wax paper. Bake at 325° for 30 minutes.

Combine icing ingredients and spread on top while warm. Cut into small diamonds and remove wax paper promptly. Line tin boxes with wax paper and cold pack into the tins to age.

My family called these "Sade's jawbreakers" because the old tins she used did not close properly, so they became hard and chewy, but still good to eat. They keep well, stale or not!
