  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • flour - 1/4 c
  • butter - 1/4 c
  • evaporated milk - 2 c
  • pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • chopped onion - 1/4 c
  • chopped green pepper - 1/4 c
  • shredded Cheddar cheese - 2/3 c
  • mayonnaise - 1/2 c
  • chili sauce - 3 Tbsp
  • medium head cabbage - 1 item
  • chopped sweet red pepper - 1/4 c

How to make layered cabbage casserole:

Cut cabbage into small wedges. Cook in boiling salted water until tender. Drain. Place wedges in a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Set aside. Melt butter in a small saucepan. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Gradually stir in milk. Cook over medium heat until thickened, stirring constantly. Pour over cabbage wedges. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes. Combine remaining ingredients, mixing well. Spoon over cabbage. Return to oven and bake 20 minutes.
