Irish soda bread
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1/4 c
- milk - 1 item
- salt - 1 tsp
- buttermilk
- baking powder - 1 tsp
- baking soda - 1 tsp
- all-purpose flour - 4 c
- raisins - 2 c
- margarine - 1/4 c
- egg, beaten - 1 item
- caraway seed - 3 4
How to make irish soda bread:
In mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Cut in margarine until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in caraway seed and raisins. Combine buttermilk and egg; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead lightly until smooth. Shape dough into a ball and place on a greased baking pan. Pat into a 7-inch round loaf. Cut a 4-inch cross about 1 1/4 inches deep on top to allow for expansion. Brush with milk. Bake at 375° for 1 hour.Recipe categories: Breads, Quick breads, Irish.
