Hot cross buns
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1/4 c
- cinnamon - 1/2 tsp
- eggs - 3 item
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- flour
- nutmeg - 1/4 tsp
- margarine - 1/2 c
- warm water - 1/2 c
- cardamom
- currants - 1/2 c
- packs yeast - 2 item
How to make hot cross buns:
Scald milk, sugar, margarine and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Sift flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom.In a large bowl beat 2 egg whites and 3 egg yolks (keep 1 egg white and set aside). Add cooled milk and yeast mix. Then add currants. Beat well. Add flour, gradually, until you have a soft dough, but not sticky. Let rise. Pat out. Cut and shape. Place on greased pan. Cut a shallow cross on top of each bun. Beat egg white and brush on rolls. Let rise until doubled. Bake at 375° for 15 minutes.
Using a pastry icing bag, make icing cross on each bun.
