  • sugar - 2/3 c
  • salt - 2 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • plain flour - 7 c
  • yeast - 1 pkg
  • lukewarm water - 1/4 c
  • sweet milk
  • shortening or margarine - 1/2 c

How to make homemade white bread:

Scald milk; stir in shortening, sugar and salt. Put 5 1/2 cups flour in mixing bowl. In center, place egg. Add yeast which has been dissolved in lukewarm water. Stir in the milk mixture and stir until smooth; this will make a stiff batter. Cover with a damp cloth. Set in a warm place and let rise for 2 hours or until double in bulk. Punch down. Using the rest of the flour, turn onto a floured board and knead until firm, smooth and elastic. Shape into 3 loaves or buns. Cover; let rise for 1 1/2 hours. Bake at 350° for around 40 minutes.
