  • sugar - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 Tbsp
  • softened shortening - 1/3 c
  • warm water - 1/2 c
  • yeast - 4 tsp
  • all-purpose flour, divided - 6 6

How to make homemade white bread:

In a 4-quart mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup warm water. Let mixture stand for 5 minutes, then add 1 1/2 cups warm water and 3 cups all-purpose flour. Beat until smooth, about 100 strokes. Cover; let rise 2 hours.

Add the softened shortening and salt. Stir in remaining flour (3 to 3 1/2 cups to make a soft dough). Knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic (5 to 6 minutes). Place in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Make into 2 loaves. Place in greased 8 x 4-inch bread pan. Let rise about 1 hour. Bake at 400° until golden brown, about 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from pans to cool.
