  • salt - 2 3
  • margarine - 7 8
  • honey - 4 Tbsp
  • dry milk - 1/4 1/2
  • yeast - 2 oz
  • lukewarm water
  • big handfuls unprocessed bran - 2 item
  • dash of wheat germ - 1 item
  • part whole wheat flour - 1 item
  • parts bread flour - 3 item

How to make hearty whole wheat bread:

Soften yeast in lukewarm water with honey. Melt margarine in saucepan. Cool slightly. When yeast is bubbly, add 4 more heaping cups warm water, milk, salt, the melted shortening, bran and wheat germ. Mix and add flours (the total amount will equal almost 5 pounds of flour). Knead well. Place in a warm place in greased bowl.

Cover with clean dish towel. Let rise until double in bulk. Knead and divide into four loaves. Knead and shape in loaves. Put in greased loaf pans, lightly patting tops of loaves with melted shortening. Cover again and let rise until double. Bake in a 350° oven for about 50 minutes. Test by knocking on bottom of loaf to hear a hollow sound. Cool on racks (remove from pans to cool).
