  • salt - 1 1
  • water - 2 qt
  • pepper - 1 tsp
  • Worcestershire sauce - 1/4 c
  • hot sauce - 1/2 tsp
  • cloves garlic, chopped - 8 item
  • large onion, chopped - 1 item
  • carrots, sliced - 6 item
  • ham hock - 1 item
  • ground beef, cooked and drained - 1 lb
  • dried Great Northern beans - 2 lb
  • cans consomme - 4 1/2
  • coarsely chopped ham - 2 c
  • fine barley - 1 c
  • fresh jalapeno peppers, split and seeded - 2 item

How to make hearty bean and barley soup:

Sort and wash beans; place in a large Dutch oven. Cover with water 2 inches above beans. Let soak overnight. Drain. Add 2 quarts water; bring to a boil. Add remaining ingredients; cover, reduce heat and simmer 2 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Yields 5 1/2 quarts. Freezes well.
