Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 1/4 c
  • butter - 1/2 c
  • toasted almonds - 1/2 c
  • light cream - 1 c
  • pepper - 1/2 tsp
  • soy sauce - 2 tsp
  • can sliced water chestnuts - 5 oz
  • hot pepper sauce - 1/8 tsp
  • sliced mushrooms - 1 lb
  • medium onion, chopped - 1 item
  • sharp Cheddar cheese, grated - 3/4 c
  • frozen French-cut green beans - 3 4
  • flavor enhancer optional - 1 tsp

How to make green bean casserole:

Saute mushrooms and onion in butter. Add flour and cook until smooth. Add cream slowly, then cheese and seasonings. Simmer until cheese melts. Cook green beans in salted water; drain. Mix with sauce. Add water chestnuts; top with slivered, blanched toasted almonds. Bake at 375° for 20 minutes. This can be made ahead. Refrigerate, then bake for approximately 35 to 40 minutes.
