Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/4 c
  • salt - 1 Tbsp
  • flour - 4 c
  • shortening - 1/4 c
  • very warm water
  • envelope yeast - 1 item

How to make grandma's bread:

Mix together the shortening, yeast, sugar, warm water and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add 3 cups of flour and stir together. Add 1 cup flour and then turn onto floured bread board or pastry cloth. Knead for about 5 minutes, adding flour until it is no longer sticky.

Put in warm place and let rise until double in bulk, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Punch down. Turn out on board, knead lightly and divide into two loaves. Lightly grease two 7-inch bread pans and put shaped dough into them. Let rise until dough is about 1-inch above rim of pan. Bake at 375° for 25 minutes.
