Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • flour
  • nutmeg - 1/4 tsp
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • baking powder - 1/2 tsp
  • boiling water - 1 c
  • egg - 1 item
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • molasses - 1 c
  • ginger - 1 tsp
  • cloves - 1/8 tsp

How to make gingerbread:

Combine shortening, salt and spices. Add sugar gradually and cream until light. Add egg and beat thoroughly. Add molasses and blend. Sift flour with baking powder and soda; add to creamed mixture, blending well. Add boiling water and beat until smooth. Pour batter into a greased and floured 10 x 10 x 2-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 50 to 60 minutes until toothpick comes out clean from center. Serve warm with whipped cream.
