Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 2 c
  • eggs - 4 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • stick margarine - 1 item
  • butter - 1 c
  • egg yolks - 3 item
  • coconut - 1 c
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • all-purpose flour
  • nuts - 1 c
  • dash of salt - 1 item
  • bar German sweet chocolate - 1 item
  • Beat egg whites until stiff and set aside

How to make german chocolate cake:

Melt chocolate in 1/2 cup boiling water and set aside. Beat egg whites until stiff and set aside. Cream shortening, sugar and egg yolks. Dissolve soda in buttermilk. Add flour and buttermilk alternately to creamed mixture. Add the melted chocolate and vanilla. Fold in egg whites. Bake in 3 (9-inch) cake pans (greased and floured) at 350° for 40 minutes. Cool and put Filling between layers.Filling:1 large can evaporated milk1 stick margarine1 c. sugar3 egg yolks1 c. nuts1 c. coconut1 tsp. vanilla Mix the sugar, margarine, egg yolks and the milk. Cook in double boiler until thick; remove from heat. When almost cool, add nuts, coconut and vanilla. Spread on cake.
