Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 2 c
  • flour - 2 c
  • stick margarine - 1 item
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • water - 1 c
  • cocoa - 4 Tbsp
  • eggs, slightly beaten - 2 item
  • buttermilk - 1/2 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • Put margarine, shortening, cocoa and water in saucepan
  • milk - 6 Tbsp
  • box powdered sugar - 1 item
  • chopped nuts - 1 c

How to make funeral cake:

Sift sugar and flour together into bowl. Put margarine, shortening, cocoa and water in saucepan. Bring to rapid boil and pour over sugar and flour mixture. Mix well. Add rest of ingredients and mix well. Pour into greased 11 x 16-inch pan. Bake 20 to 30 minutes at 400° until a toothpick comes out clean or cake begins to pull away from sides of pan. Ice with Funeral Cake Icing while cake is hot. Serve with cool. Soothing at funeral luncheons or anytime.Funeral Cake Icing:1 stick margarine4 Tbsp. cocoa6 Tbsp. milk1 box powdered sugar1 tsp. vanilla1 c. chopped nuts Start icing 5 minutes before cake is done. Bring margarine, cocoa and milk to a boil. Remove from heat. Add to powdered sugar, vanilla and nuts. Beat well. Ice cake while cake is hot. Serve when cool.
