Fried green tomatoes
Ingredients/Components
- milk - 1/4 c
- flour - 1/2 c
- eggs, beaten - 2 item
- cooking oil - 1/4 c
- medium firm green tomatoes - 3 item
- Salt and pepper - 1 item
- Bread crumbs or cornmeal - 1 item
How to make fried green tomatoes:
Cut unpeeled tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle slices with salt and pepper. Let tomatoes stand for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, place milk, flour, eggs and bread crumbs each in separate shallow dishes. Dip tomato slices first in milk, then flour, then eggs, then bread crumbs (or cornmeal). In a skillet fry half the coated tomato slices at a time in hot oil over medium heat for 4 to 6 minutes on each side or until brown. (If tomatoes begin to brown too quickly, reduce heat to medium low.) If necessary, add more oil.Recipe categories: Side dish, Vegetables, Southern u.s..
