Ingredients/Components

  • granulated sugar
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • cocoa - 1/2 c
  • confectioners sugar - 2 c
  • baking powder - 1/4 tsp
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • large eggs - 2 item
  • sifted flour
  • Crisco shortening - 1/2 c
  • hot coffee - 1 c
  • canned cream - 1/2 c
  • margarine 1 stick - 1/4 lb
  • Mix cocoa and hot coffee; set aside

How to make devil's food cake:

Sift together first 4 ingredients. Mix cocoa and hot coffee; set aside. Cream Crisco and sugar; add eggs, slightly beaten. Add flour mixture and cocoa mixture alternately to sifted ingredients and beat well. Pour into large flat cake pan that has been greased and lightly floured. Bake 45 to 55 minutes at 350°. Test with toothpick.Caramel Icing:1 1/2 c. brown sugar1/4 lb. margarine (1 stick)1/2 c. canned cream2 c. confectioners sugar Cook first three ingredients for 5 minutes; cool and whip in confectioners sugar.

This is a recipe from the 1940's. It was one that my mother, Florence Redman, baked often. It is not a fine textured cake, but is wonderful.
