Ingredients/Components

  • cinnamon - 1/4 tsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • boiling water - 1 c
  • egg - 1 item
  • shortening - 1/4 c
  • dark brown sugar, packed - 3/4 c
  • sifted flour
  • grated orange peel - 2 tsp
  • orange juice - 1/4 c
  • chopped pecans or walnuts - 1 c
  • mace - 1/8 tsp
  • chopped pitted dates - 3/4 c

How to make date nut bread:

In medium bowl, mix boiling water, orange juice and dates and let stand until at room temperature. Heat oven to 325°. Grease an 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2-inch loaf pan with unsalted shortening and coat lightly with flour.

In a medium bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon, mace, baking soda and salt. In a large bowl, mix shortening and dark brown sugar together until blended. Add egg to shortening mixture and beat until blended. Stir date mixture into shortening mixture. Add sifted dry ingredients into batter and mix until dry ingredients are moistened. Fold nuts and orange peel into batter. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake 65 to 70 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center of the bread comes out clean.

Remove bread from oven and cool on a wire cake rack for 10 minutes. Remove bread from pan and cool completely. When cool, wrap bread tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store overnight before slicing. Makes 1 loaf.
