  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • milk - 2/3 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 4 c
  • brown sugar - 1/2 c
  • water - 1/2 c
  • baking soda - 2 tsp
  • shortening - 1 c
  • cream of tartar - 4 tsp
  • white sugar - 1 c
  • cut up dates - 1 lb

How to make date filled cookies:

Cream together first 4 ingredients; add milk. Sift together flour, tartar, soda and salt. Add flour mixture to sugar mixture and add vanilla. Roll out on a floured board to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with a very small cookie cutter 2-inches. Place a teaspoonful of date filling on each cookie and cover with a second cookie; press edges together. With a fork, punch holes in top of cookie. Bake at 375° until light brown, about 12 minutes.

Filling: Mix dates, sugar and water and cook until soft and thickened; add vanilla.
