Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/3 c
  • vinegar - 3 c
  • cloves garlic - 3 item
  • celery seed
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • green peppers, chopped - 2 item
  • turmeric powder
  • sliced cucumbers - 4 qt
  • medium sliced onions - 6 item

How to make crisp bread and butter pickles:

Do not pare cucumbers; slice. Add onions, peppers and garlic, if desired. Add salt; cover with cracked ice. Mix thoroughly; let stand 3 hours. Drain well. Combine remaining ingredients. Pour over cucumber mixture; heat just to boil. Seal in hot, sterilized jars. Makes about 8 pints.
