  • sugar - 1 Tbsp
  • milk - 1/2 c
  • flour - 1 Tbsp
  • water - 2 c
  • baking powder
  • egg - 1 item
  • cornmeal - 3/4 c
  • pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • chili powder - 1 Tbsp
  • chopped green pepper - 1/2 c
  • melted shortening - 4 Tbsp
  • ground beef - 1 lb
  • large onion, chopped - 1 item
  • can condensed tomato soup - 1 item
  • salt, divided
  • drained whole kernel corn - 1 c

How to make cornbread pie:

Saute beef and onion until lightly browned. Add soup, 1 teaspoon of salt, water, pepper, corn, chili powder and green pepper. Simmer 15 minutes. Place in lightly greased 1 1/2-quart casserole; set aside. Combine cornbread, flour, sugar, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and baking powder. Add remaining ingredients. Mix well. Spoon cornbread topping over meat mixture. Bake in preheated 400° oven for about 25 minutes.
