Ingredients/Components

  • softened butter or margarine - 1/2 c
  • sugar - 1 c
  • egg yolks - 2 item
  • sifted flour
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • baking powder - 2 tsp
  • stiffly beaten egg whites - 2 item
  • milk - 1/2 c
  • brown sugar
  • flour - 2 Tbsp
  • cinnamon - 2 tsp
  • melted butter - 2 3
  • broken nuts - 1/2 1

How to make coffee cake:

Topper:3/4 to 1 c. brown sugar2 Tbsp. flour2 tsp. cinnamon2 to 3 Tbsp. melted butter1/2 to 1 c. broken nuts Combine Topper ingredients together.

Baking Temperature: 350°. Baking Time: 30 minutes.

Cream butter and sugar; beat in egg yolks. Mix dry ingredients and add alternately with milk to creamed mixture, beating after each addition. Fold in egg whites. Spread about half of the batter in 9 x 9-inch pan. Sprinkle on about 2/3 of the Topper. Add rest of batter and top with rest of Topper. Can be made ahead, wrapped and stored in freezer.

Variation: Omit nuts in Topper.
