Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 6 c
  • water - 2 c
  • vinegar - 4 c
  • celery seed - 2 Tbsp
  • cabbage - 4 c
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • green peppers - 18 item
  • turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • onions - 4 c
  • green tomatoes - 10 item
  • salt not iodized - 1/2 c
  • pickling spice, wrapped in cheesecloth - 2 Tbsp

How to make chow chow:

Grind the following ingredients: onions, cabbage, green tomatoes and green peppers. Pour salt over mixture and let stand 2 hours.

Mix next 6 ingredients. Heat this mixture. While heating, wash ground ingredients with cool water, using a colander.

Add all together and simmer 3 to 5 minutes with pickling spice. Put in hot jars and seal.
