  • stick margarine - 1 item
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • cocoa - 4 Tbsp
  • water - 1 c
  • flour - 2 c
  • sugar - 2 c
  • pinch of salt - 1 item
  • buttermilk - 1/2 c
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • eggs, slightly beaten - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • Bring to a rapid boil and pour over flour, sugar and salt which have been sifted into a large bowl
  • milk - 6 Tbsp
  • box sifted powdered sugar - 1 item
  • chopped pecans - 1/2 1
  • flaked coconut - 1 c
  • dash of salt - 1 item

How to make chocolate picnic cake:

Combine margarine, shortening, cocoa and water in small saucepan. Bring to a rapid boil and pour over flour, sugar and salt which have been sifted into a large bowl. Mix well and add buttermilk to which soda has been added. Blend well; add slightly beaten eggs and vanilla. Mix well and pour into a greased and floured 13 x 9-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes. About 5 minutes before cake is done, start to make frosting.Frosting for Chocolate Picnic Cake:1 stick margarine4 Tbsp. cocoa6 Tbsp. milk1 box sifted powdered sugar1 tsp. vanilla1/2 to 1 c. chopped pecans1 c. flaked coconut dash of salt Combine margarine, cocoa and milk in saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add into pot the powdered sugar, vanilla, pecans, coconut and salt. Beat well and spread on hot cake.
