How to make chocolate marbled cake:

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease & flour two 9 inch round cake pans. Cream the butter, then slowly add the 2 cups sugar, beating until thoroughly blended. Add the eggs, beating thoroughly, then mix in the vanilla. Combine the flour, 1 tsp of the baking soda and the salt and mix in a separate small dish. Add to the creamed mixture along with the buttermilk and beat until the batter is smooth.

In a small bowl, combine the cocoa, remaining 1/3 cup sugar and remaining 1/4 tsp baking soda and stir them together. Add the water & blend well. Add about 1 1/2 cups of the yellow cake batter to the chocolate mixture and blend well.

Divide the remaining yellow batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Spoon dollops of the chocolate batter on top, also dividing it evenly between the two pans. Using the tines of a fork swirl the two batters together to create a marbled effect in each pan.

Bake for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Remove from oven and cool in the pans on a rack.

Fill & frost with chocolate icing.
