Ingredients/Components

  • whole wheat flour - 3/4 c
  • oat bran 3 oz - 2/3 c
  • cocoa unsweetened - 1/4 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • baking powder - 1 tsp
  • egg whites - 2 item
  • pure maple syrup - 1/2 c
  • vegetable oil - 2 Tbsp
  • applesauce - 1/2 c
  • apple juice - 2/3 c
  • vanilla extract - 2 tsp
  • almond extract - 1/4 tsp
  • chocolate chips
  • chopped walnuts - 2 Tbsp

How to make chocolate cake:

Topping:2 Tbsp. chocolate chips2 Tbsp. chopped walnuts Preheat oven to 325°. Lightly oil an 8-inch square baking pan or spray with a nonstick cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine flour, oat bran, cocoa, baking powder and baking soda. Mix well.

In another bowl, combine remaining cake ingredients. Beat with a fork or wire whisk until blended. Add to dry mixture, mixing until all ingredients are moistened.

Place in prepared pan. Sprinkle nuts and chocolate chips evenly over cake, pressing them lightly into the cake. Bake 35 minutes. Cool in pan on wire rack. Cut into squares to serve. Makes 12 servings.
