Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • eggs - 7 item
  • salt - 1 Tbsp
  • flour - 7 c
  • butter - 1/2 c
  • oil - 3 Tbsp
  • boiling water - 1 c
  • warm water - 3/4 c
  • honey - 1/3 c
  • poppy seed - 1 item
  • yeast - 3 pkg
  • milk/cream - 1 Tbsp

How to make challah:

Dissolve yeast in warm water with 2 tablespoons sugar. Cover. Let stand in warm place. Place butter in mixing bowl with salt and boiling water. When melted, add oil, sugar and honey. Add 6 eggs, one at a time. Mix at low speed. Add yeast, mix 4 cups flour. Mix well. Add remaining flour and knead 10 minutes on table dusted with flour. Add flour to knead. Put in buttered bowl and turn, butter side up. Cover, let rise 1 hour, until doubled. Punch down. Let rise again 1 hour until doubled.

Divide dough into 2 parts. Then divide each into 3 parts. Roll each of the 3 parts into long round logs. Braid the three. Put on greased pans or in greased loaf pans (2). Let rise 1 hour until doubled. Bake at 325° for 45 minutes until brown. Mix 1 egg with cream, brush loaves before baking and sprinkle with seeds.
