Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour
  • almond extract
  • egg - 1 item
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • powdered sugar - 1 c
  • margarine - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 1/2 tsp
  • crushed peppermint candy - 1/2 c

How to make candy cane cookies:

Mix shortening, margarine, sugar, egg and flavoring. Add flour and salt; mix well. Divide dough in half. Color 1 half with red coloring. Roll a 4-inch strip, using 1 teaspoon of dough, from each color. For smooth, even strips, roll on floured board. Place strips, side by side, pressing lightly together and twist.

Place on cookie sheet. Curve top down to form cane. Bake at 375° for 9 minutes. While still warm, sprinkle with a mixture of candy and sugar.
