Bunuelos
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 3 tsp
- milk - 1 c
- flour - 4 c
- water
- baking soda - 2 tsp
- pinch of salt - 1 item
- dark brown sugar
- melted shortening - 3 tsp
- cinnamon sticks - 3 item
- well beaten eggs - 2 item
- cooking sherry - 8 Tbsp
- large bottle oil for deep frying - 1 item
How to make bunuelos:
Syrup:2 c. water8 Tbsp. cooking sherry1 1/2 c. dark brown sugar3 cinnamon sticks Sift the flour, baking soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar and mix in egg, shortening and enough milk to form a soft, not too sticky, dough. Divide the dough into 18 to 24 equal size pieces, sprinkling them with little flour. Shape each one in a bowl. Cover with a sheet of plastic wrap and leave to stand for 30 minutes. Shape into flat cakes and make a shallow depression in the center of each one. Heat oil to 375° and deep-fry 4 to 5 at a time until golden brown and puffy. Drain on paper towels.Meanwhile, put all syrup ingredients in a heavy saucepan. Stir and bring to a slow boil. Simmer, stirring constantly, for approximately 25 minutes or until syrup thickens. Discard the cinnamon sticks. Serve the syrup over the bunuelos. Serve as snacks or dessert.
