Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sliced cucumbers - 1 gal
- thinly sliced onions - 1 qt
- cold water - 2 qt
- salt - 1/2 c
- vinegar - 1 qt
- water - 1 qt
- mustard seed - 4 Tbsp
- celery seed - 1 tsp
- turmeric - 1 tsp
- sugar - 2 c
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Dissolve salt in 2 quarts cold water. Pour over the sliced cucumbers and onions. Let stand 3 to 4 hours or overnight. Drain well.Combine vinegar, 1 quart water, mustard seed, celery seed, turmeric and sugar. Heat to almost a boil; add cucumbers and onions. Cook on low heat, stirring often for 20 minutes. Can while hot.
