Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/4 c
  • water - 2 c
  • ground cloves - 1/2 tsp
  • celery seed - 1 tsp
  • white vinegar - 3 c
  • mustard seed - 2 tsp
  • turmeric
  • sliced cucumbers - 1 gal
  • sliced onions - 8 item

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Mix ingredients, except cukes and onions, then add cukes and onions. Bring just to boiling point, lifting cukes and turning them over with a spoon as slices begin to curl. Pack in sterilized jars and seal. Do not use the same ingredients for second batch. Always make fresh. Measure cukes in gallon jar, adding an extra cuke for 5 pints.
