Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • vinegar - 3 c
  • large onions, chopped - 2 item
  • celery seed
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • green peppers - 6 item
  • turmeric
  • cucumbers, sliced - 4 qt
  • cracked ice - 1 item
  • pure salt not iodized - 1/2 c

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Mix first 3 ingredients with pure salt (not iodized). Cover with cracked ice. Mix well. Let stand 3 hours. Drain and rinse off salt brine.

Bring the last 5 ingredients to a boil, then add cucumber mixture. Heat thoroughly, but don't boil. Seal in hot, clean jars.
