Ingredients/Components

  • cucumbers, sliced - 4 lb
  • sliced onions - 2 lb
  • vinegar - 3 c
  • canning salt - 1/3 c
  • sugar - 2 c
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • turmeric - 2 tsp
  • ginger - 1 tsp
  • celery seed - 2 tsp
  • peppercorns - 1 tsp

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Combine cucumber and onion slices in large bowl. Layer with salt; cover with ice cubes. Let stand 1 1/2 hours; drain and rinse. Place remaining ingredients in large pot; bring to a boil. Add drained cucumbers and onions. Process 10 minutes in hot water canning bath.
