  • medium cucumbers, sliced thin - 12 item
  • small onions, sliced thin - 6 item
  • bag salt pickling salt - 1/2 c
  • cool water - 1 to
  • sugar - 2 c
  • cornstarch - 1 tsp
  • black pepper - 1/2 tsp
  • ginger - 1 tsp
  • turmeric - 1 tsp
  • mustard seed - 2 tsp
  • celery seed - 2 tsp
  • cider vinegar - 2 c

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Put cucumbers and onions to soak for 2 hours in brine made of salt and water.

Meantime, combine all other ingredients in a kettle (not copper or iron) and boil for 1 minute. Add cucumbers and onions (soaked and drained) to mixture. Cook until heated through only. Do not boil. Pack at once in hot sterilized jars and seal. Makes 3 to 4 pints.
