Ingredients/Components
- medium cucumbers, sliced thin - 12 item
- small onions, sliced thin - 6 item
- bag salt pickling salt - 1/2 c
- cool water - 1 to
- sugar - 2 c
- cornstarch - 1 tsp
- black pepper - 1/2 tsp
- ginger - 1 tsp
- turmeric - 1 tsp
- mustard seed - 2 tsp
- celery seed - 2 tsp
- cider vinegar - 2 c
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Put cucumbers and onions to soak for 2 hours in brine made of salt and water.Meantime, combine all other ingredients in a kettle (not copper or iron) and boil for 1 minute. Add cucumbers and onions (soaked and drained) to mixture. Cook until heated through only. Do not boil. Pack at once in hot sterilized jars and seal. Makes 3 to 4 pints.
