Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • salt - 1/3 c
  • celery seed
  • green pepper, sliced - 1 item
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • turmeric
  • sliced cucumbers - 4 qt
  • distilled white vinegar - 3 c
  • sweet red pepper - 1 item
  • medium white onions - 6 item

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Slice cucumbers thin. Layer cukes, onions, peppers and salt in pan or crock-pot. Not aluminum! Place a layer of ice in between each layer (approximately 4 layers). Chill for 3 hours or refrigerate overnight. Drain. Prepare syrup mixture of remaining ingredients and pour over cucumber mixture. Heat to boiling. Cook 3 minutes until heated through. Seal in sterilized jars. Makes 8 pints.
