Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- salt - 1/3 c
- celery seed
- green pepper, sliced - 1 item
- mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
- turmeric
- sliced cucumbers - 4 qt
- distilled white vinegar - 3 c
- sweet red pepper - 1 item
- medium white onions - 6 item
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Slice cucumbers thin. Layer cukes, onions, peppers and salt in pan or crock-pot. Not aluminum! Place a layer of ice in between each layer (approximately 4 layers). Chill for 3 hours or refrigerate overnight. Drain. Prepare syrup mixture of remaining ingredients and pour over cucumber mixture. Heat to boiling. Cook 3 minutes until heated through. Seal in sterilized jars. Makes 8 pints.Recipe categories: American, Condiments, etc., Vegetables.
